Dali rose. Digital, 2017.

I made this piece using a Wacom tablet on Corel Painter. It's a graphic painting of the rose in Salvador Dali's The Meditative Rose (below).

Although I was copying from a Surrealist painting, my method was Impressionistic. Thick, short brush strokes are clearly visible, with colors juxtaposed against one another. Compare this to Dali's rose, whose smoothness makes it appear almost as if it's made of plastic (which makes perfect sense for a Surrealist painting).

As a result, my rose is not the most convincing (you wouldn’t be fooled into thinking this was a photograph). But my main goal wasn't to fool, it was to capture the essence of the rose and the life within it. So while I copied from Dali's rose, it wouldn't make sense to call this a copy. "Re-depiction" would be more suitable.
